CABINET DECISIONS TAKEN DURING THE CABINET MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 7th OCTOBER, 2019

 AT STATE HOUSE, ENTEBBE.

1.Approved the Regulation of Veterinary Medical Products, Biologicals, Chemicals and Devices. The objectives include;

 

i.To apply veterinary science in regulation of manufacture, import, export, distribution, sale and use of Veterinary inputs including medical products and biologicals and equipment to fulfil the needs of the animal subsector and improve animal health and productivity;

 

ii.To promote safe application and use of veterinary inputs along the livestock value chain from production through processing and marketing to enhance the quality, safe and competitiveness of animal products in local, regional and international markets;

 

iii.To control veterinary chemicals and antibiotics residues in line with recommended maximum residue level (MRLs) in animal products and consequently product consumers against adverse effects;

 

iv. To safeguard farmers and other stakeholders against unnecessary losses incurred through use of ineffective veterinary medicines, biologicals and devices;

 

v.To enhance research and development, information management and veterinary extension services in the country;

 

vi. To monitor and ensure rational use of veterinary medicines, biologicals, chemicals and devices, correct prescription, good dispensing practices and appropriate usage of veterinary medicines and biologicals.

 

2.Approved the proposed new mitigation measures to reduce the occurrence of animal disease outbreaks and tick resistance to Acaricides.

 

The objectives of the proposed measures include:

i.To establish an effective, effective and sustainable mechanism for an orderly management (diagnosis, surveillance and control) of animal disease and tick resistance to acaricides;

ii.To strengthen Policy and Legislative Framework to control animal diseases;

iii.To establish /upgrade existing infrastructure (holding grounds, laboratories, quarantine stations, stock route, checkpoints, border points) to strengthen animal movement and disease control in the country;

iv.To strengthen research and development for animal disease, parasites and vectors;

v. To strengthen extension services for improving animal health, animal production and productivity in the country.
